Mark Shubrook fished the Top Lake using the method that the recent Fish-O-Mania winner used. He fished shallow all day and had fish non-stop!! Mark was fishing the pole 12 metres out using a banded 6mm Barford loose pellet. Regularly feeding 4 mm Pellets and using the catapult to attract the fish into the swim, Mark caught 10 Carp to 7lb and numerous Chub, Roach, Rudd and one Perch , all in four hours!! Mark is pictured below with a carp from a session last year.
John Thorneycroft sent this photo in from his successful session on peg 9 of the Top Lake. He caught this 7lb 2oz Tench fishing strawberry luncheon and feeding Barford pellet at approx 3 rod lengths out (laying on bottom)
He sends his thanks to the guy who took the photo with his camera.
John also had 9 carp ranging between 4-8lb and 4 more tench 2lb-4lb. He also had a few lost fish so not a bad day in a 9 hour session!
Robert Northman sent these photos in from a recent trip that he and his Grandfather had here on the Top Lake. Our bailiff John had an interesting chat with his Grandfather, Bill, about his collection of old rods. Indeed, with some helpful hints from John, Bill caught his personal best of 5lbs on his 50 year old cane rod! Robert also banked a personal best of 14lb 6 oz - the same carp he's caught 3 times in the last four years - each time being his PB!
These fish were caught on the Pleasure Lake showing we have a variety of fish!! The carp was caught by Ray Smart and was 16lb - the Perch I'm afraid didn't move the scales!!
The event was blessed with good weather and a full 130 anglers competed. Due to no-shows 10 reserves also had the bonus of fishing. One of those reserves was our very own Daniel Brydon who drew on Colton peg 16 - he wasn’t disappointed with his draw but unfortunately a day out at Hayfield was not meant to be! Even after loose feeding his top kit! Fishing up in the water it is important to keep feeding your swim whilst playing the fish. Some top anglers do this by holding the top kit inbetween their knees and firing out bait. This is all well and good as long as you keep a grip! Seeing Daniel's top kit swim past caused much amusement for everyone - it was later caught by peg 30 - who weighed the fish in!!!
Chris Knights (Harleston AC) had 3 chub and carp which were caught on banded 6mm pellet up in the water on a pole and waggler - he managed a sneaky 15lb carp with 5 minutes left.
2nd place was Shane Trower (Corby) who had 132lb of Pleasure Lake carp to 12lb. He also fished mid water on a pole and waggler with pellet and corn.
Third placed Rotheram based angler Rob Austin (Halkon Hunt AC) was opposite Shane on the point (peg 31). Rob caught carp to 14lb on the pellet wag.
Local angler Paul Ashford (Jewsons AC) came fourth overall on Colton lkae and caught shallow feeding caster with maggot hookbait and had carp to 12lb. And finally our own Daniel Brydon took 5th overall with 113lb of fish to 10lb caught on the same method as Paul.
All lakes (except Abbey Waters) were used and the top three results from each lake can be seen on the Match Results page. The lakes fished well. The full run down is below – photos follow:

Local angler Byron Mann came down for a session on the pleasure lake. On a nice day the fish in the pleasure lake didnt seem to want to play ball and a late switch to the top lake proved worthwhile with an immaculate 11lb 8oz mirror carp;
Fishing a waggler rig in the margins with a size 12 hook baited with sweetcorn Byron fed Barford pellets and this was one of many 'late' carp that came out on the day.
